Dr. Amanda McKinney, PsyD, HSPP (she/her)
Founder & Director | Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Amanda McKinney is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and the Director of Modern Mental Health. While her role is now primarily focused on leading the organization, supporting staff, and overseeing clinical operations, she continues to maintain a limited clinical caseload and provides consultation and supervision to clinicians and trainees.
Dr. McKinney's primary area of clinical expertise is comprehensive psychological assessment. She has extensive experience conducting evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults to assist with diagnostic clarification and treatment planning. Her areas of specialization include autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, learning disabilities, executive functioning, personality and diagnostic evaluations, and a variety of pre-surgical and medical clearance assessments.
Although she sees only a small number of therapy clients, Dr. McKinney has a particular interest in working with LGBTQ+ individuals, including those exploring gender identity or pursuing gender-affirming medical care. She has extensive experience providing evaluations and letters of support consistent with WPATH Standards of Care for gender-affirming surgeries. Her therapeutic approach is collaborative, genuine, and down-to-earth, with an emphasis on creating a welcoming environment where clients feel comfortable being themselves.
Dr. McKinney is often accompanied at the office by her dog, Pepita, who serves as an unofficial morale booster for staff and clients alike.
If you have allergies, a fear of dogs, or cannot have a dog in the room for any reason, please let us know before your appointment so alternate arrangements can be made.
Outside of work, Dr. McKinney enjoys hiking, traveling, rollerblading, skateboarding, spending time with Pepita, visiting roadside attractions, and listening to punk and Midwest emo music.
